  • Scrapped: the deadly business of dismantling ships in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has no metal resources of its own city, so the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong, its largest second city, generate high profits for their owners. Workers though, enjoy none of the benefits of that profit; wages are barely enough to live on and there are no health and safety regulations to protect them. Injuries are a frequent occurrence and even death is not uncommon. Turkey's Izmir Ship Recycling Co. acquired the 42-year-old Pacific for 2.5 million euros ($3.3 million) after it was decided that renovation would have been too costly following several modifications and five years of being decommissioned. The vintage cruise liner arrived from Genoa, Italy, at the breakers in the seaside town of Aliaga in Turkey late on Tuesday (August 6) after a difficult trip in a violent storm, Ceviker said. The Pacific began taking on water and could be seen listing as it limped into port, requiring the help of additional tugboats to make it to the ship-breakers yard.
